Licedei is the first and the only clown-mime theatre in Russia, which is engaged in the clownery genre. It was organized in 1968 in Leningrad by Slava Polunin. Some of its other organizers are still working in Licedei, but the main initiative group of the company is represented by Licedei's workshop graduates of 1984 year. For the last ten years the theatre toured not only in Russia and the former Soviet Union countries, but also in the USA, Columbia, Brazil, Hong-Kong, China, Vietnam, Germany, France, Spain, England, Holland, Denmark, Austria, Japan, New Zealand, Cuba, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Poland, Hungary, Bulgaria, Finland, Israel, Canada and Luxembourg.
Prize laureates of Lenin Komsomol, trade-unions, Golden Ostap Festival of satire and humor in St. Petersburg, Constellation Festival, theatre festivals in Columbia, Hong-Kong, China, Germany, Holland and France, honorary citizens of Lensinkton (US) - Licedei have drawn many a full houses in grand concerts and shows produced in the Kremlin (Moscow) and in the Tavrichesky Palace (St. Petersburg). Besides, they performed in the largest show halls in Russia (up to 4-7 thousands spectators) and in the Russian main sports arena, Luzhniki, which may incorporate up to 70-thousand audience.
The theatre's show programme consists of the best items taken from all the performances on their record. With this particular show Litsedei have always been warmly and enthusiastically welcomed when touring in the countries mentioned. At present there are three spectacles in the theatre's repertory. "Pokatuha" is a show programme compiled of the best fragments taken from spectacles of various periods. "Katastrofa" (Catastrophe) is an outdoor spectacle designed for spacious areas. "Okean" (Ocean) is the newest spectacle which premiere will take place this year. It's a poetic clownery dedicated to love, freedom and sea.
The unique feature of a dumb clown- mime performance is that it can be understood both by adults and children, i. e. any age. It is not like circus in the usual sense of the word; it is a theatre on the borderline between clownery, variety show and tragic farce. Critics call it poetic clownery. No recitals, no social context and no clearly emphasized national orientation is what makes it so different and unique. No words - instead there are plastic movements and mimicry, music and expressiveness. Laughter and tears, joy and sadness, the good and the evil - these are the simple emotions and truths of Licedei's art which can be understood by anyone from any place. In the world's theater charts Licedei are among the best theatres performing in the theatrical clownery genre.
