V 1988 godu on okonchil fakul'tet massovyh predstavleniy GITISa, gde zanimalsya na kurse V.Shalevicha, byl prinyat Valentinom Pluchekom v truppu Moskovskogo teatra satiry. Na scene akter s uspehom igral v razlichnyh zhanrah - v klassike, myuzikle, avangardnyh postanovkah. Kritikami i zritelyami byla priznana blistatel'noy sygrannaya im rol' Petruchcho v komedii V.Shekspira "Ukroschenie stroptivoy". Odnovremenno Valeriy Garkalin igral na scene teatra-studii "Chelovek". Akterom Teatra satiry on byl do 2001 goda, v nastoyaschee vremya vystupaet v antrepriznyh postanovkah. V kino Valeriya Garkalina zametili posle glavnoy roli v kriminal'noy kartine "Katala" (1989), no shirokaya populyarnost' prishla k nemu posle komedii Vladimira Men'shova "Shirli-myrli", v kotoroy on sygral srazu chetyre roli. E'ta rabota byla otmechena premiey "Kinoshok" v nominacii "Prizy za luchshie roli 1995 goda". Tem ne menee, na segodnya luchshey rol'yu Valeriya Garkalina v kino priznana rol' biologa Dezhkina v dramaticheskom teleseriale "Belye odezhdy" (1992).
