Aleksandr Shalvovich Porohovschikov rodilsya 31 yanvarya 1939 goda v Moskve. V 1941 godu ego ded, izvestnyj konstruktor i letchik, byl arestovan kak "vrag naroda" i rasstrelyan, poe'tomu sem'ya Porohovschikovyh vynuzhdena byla uehat' na Ural, v Chelyabinsk. Posle okonchaniya shkoly Aleksandr Porohovschikov postupil v Chelyabinskij medicinskij institut, gde prouchilsya do 1960 goda, kogda ego sem'ya vernulas' v Moskvu. V stolice on ustroilsya rabotat' mebel'schikom-rekvizitorom v teatr imeni Vahtangova i togda zhe nachal uchit'sya nakursah povysheniya kvalifikacii akterov teatra pri Vsesoyuznom teatral'nom obschestve, a v 1962 godu Porohovschikov postupil na vechernee otdelenie teatral'nogo uchilischa imeni M.S.Schepkina, okonchiv kotoroe v 1966 godu on stal akterom Teatra satiry. V 1967 godusostoyalsya i ego debyut v kino - akter snyalsya v nebol'shoj roli v fil'me "Poisk". V 1971 godu Aleksandra Porohovschikova priglasil k sebe v Teatr dramy i komedii na Taganke rezhisser Yurij Lyubimov, gde akter prorabotal desyat' let. Pervuyu zametnuyu rol' v kinoakter sygral v detektive Villena Novaka "Ring" (1973), a vsesoyuznuyu izvestnost' on priobrel cherez god, posle vyhoda na e'krany strany fil'ma Nikity Mihalkova "Svoj sredi chuzhih, chuzhoj sredi svoih", gde Porohovschikov ispolnil odnu iz luchshih svoih rolej - predsedatelya gubernskoj ChK Kengurova. Zatem posledovali novye zapominayuschiesya roli, pust' ne vsegda polozhitel'nyh geroev, no vsegda e'to byli sil'nye, muzhestvennye lyudi, podchas s tragicheskoj sud'boj. Sredi zametnyh rabot aktera mozhno nazvat' takie fil'my,kak "Zvezda plenitel'nogo schast'ya" (Pavel Pestel'), "Na krutizne" (ataman Volynec), "Ischi vetra" (belogvardejskij kapitan), "Krah operacii "Terror" (Boris Savinkov), "Dva dolgih gudka v tumane". V 1981 godu Aleksandr Porohovschikov pereshel v Teatr imeni A.S.Pushkina, i odnoj iz luchshih ego teatral'nyh rolej stal Vozhak v "Optimisticheskoj tragedii" V.Vishnevskogo. V kino zhe v 80-h godah akter sygral mnozhestvo raznoplanovyh rolej, v fil'mah razlichnyh zhanrov: v drame "Izbrannye", v detektivah "Kankan v Anglijskom parke" i "Mafiya", v fantasticheskih lentah "Zaveschanie professora Doue'lya" i "Lunnaya raduga" (kstati, obe - e'kranizacii, pervaya - izvestnogo romana Aleksandra Belyaeva "Golova professora Doue'lya", vtoroj - odnoimennogo proizvedeniya Sergeya Pavlova), v mezhdunarodnoj istoricheskoj postanovke "Bitva treh korolej". V 1987 godu Aleksandr Porohovschikov vpervye vystupil v kachestve rezhissera-pos'tanovschika - postavil kriminal'nuyu dramu "9 Maya" po scenariyu Viktora Merezhko, a v 1991 godu on snyal po svoemu scenariyufil'm "Cenzuru k pamyati ne dopuskayu", sygrav v nem takzhe i glavnuyu rol'. Poslednyaya rabota byla udostoena priza "Zolotoj parus" na festivale rossijskih fil'mov v San-Rafae'le.
