Valerij Nikolaev rodilsya 23 avgusta 1963 goda v Moskve. V shkole zanimalsya sportivnoj gimnastikoj, no posle pereloma ruki ot bol'shogo sporta prishlos' otkazat'sya. Professional'noe akterskoe obrazovanie on poluchil v Shkole-studii MHAT, gde zanimalsya na e'ksperimental'nom kurse Olega Tabakova. Igral na scene MHAT imeni A.P.Chehova. Ser'eznoe uvlechenie tancami, v chastnosti rok-n-rollom i stepom, prieldo k tomu, chto Nikolaev proshel stazhirovku vo Floridskom universitete i poluchil diplom po klassu tanca. V kachestve baletmejster on postavil pyat' spektaklej v MHAT imeni Chehova, v 2000 godu vystupal kak postanovschik baletnoj chasti myuzikla "Moya prekrasnaya ledi". Aktivno v kino akter nachal snimat'sya s nachala 1990-h godov - "Niagara" (1991), "Ochen' vernaya zhena" (1992), "Nastya" (1993), "Shirli-myrli" (1995) i dr. Togda zhe nachalos' ego sotrudnichestvo s televideniem: on igral v seriale "Melochi zhizni" (1992-97), a serial "Den' rozhdeniya burzhuya" (1999) i ego sikvel (2001) sposobstvovali rostu populyarnosti aktera. Valerij Nikolaev - odin iz nemnogih rossijskih akterov, kto snimaetsya v angloyazychnyh postanovkah. Na ego tvorcheskom schetu anglijskij teleserial "Derzhi vora" (1996), gollivudskie blokbastery "Svyatoj" (1997) Filippa Nojsa i "Povorot" Olivera Stouna i drugie fil'my. V 2003 godu Valerij Nikolaev ispolnil glavnuyu rol' v priklyuchencheskom teleseriale Olega Pogodina "Rodina zhdet".
