Efim Zaharovich Kopelyan rodilsya 12 aprelya 1912 goda v Gomel'skoy oblasti, v gorode Rechica. V 1935 godu on okonchil studiyu pri Leningradskom Bol'shom dramaticheskom teatre i byl prinyat v ego truppu, a vo vremya Velikoy Otechestvennoy voyny, v 1941-43 godah, sluzhil vo frontovom Teatre narodnogo opolcheniya. Na scene leningradskogo BDT, gde akter i prorabotal vsyu zhizn', on sozdal mnogo zapomnivshihsya zritelyam raznoharakternyh roley, sredi kotoryh - Dzhekson ("Ne sklonivshie golovy" Duglasa i Smita), Mario ("Sen'or Mario pishet komediyu" Nikolai), Vershinin ("Tri sestry" Chehova), Savva Morozov ("Tret'ya strazha" Kapralova i Tumanova), Mikich ("Hanuma" Cagareli).

V kino Efim Kopelyan nachal snimat'sya s 1935 goda i sygral bolee chem v 70 fil'mah. Masterstvo aktera pozvolilo Kopelyanu sozdavat' zapominayuschiesya yarkie obrazy dazhe v nebol'shih rolyah: Rulevoy ("Tanker "Derbent", 1941), pop Gapon ("Prolog", 1956), ataman Burnash ("Neulovimye mstiteli", 1967), Burcev ("Povest' o chelovecheskom serdce", 1976). Sredi luchshih kinoroley Kopelyana mozhno nazvat' Savvu Morozova v fil'me Semena Tumanova "Nikolay Bauman" i Svidrigaylova v e'kranizacii romana F.M.Dostoevskogo "Prestuplenie i nakazanie", sozdannoy L'vom Kulidzhanovym. Krome togo, rezhissery ne raz priglashali Efima Kopelyana chitat' tekst otavtora, i nepovtorimyy golos aktera mnogie pomnyat po legendarnomu mnogoseriynomu telefil'mu Tat'yany Lioznovoy "Semnadcat' mgnoveniy vesny" (1973).
