Slavic folklore is full of material that horror cinema elsewhere has never touched: forest spirits, cursed objects, the living dead of Gogol's imagination, the demons of Orthodox tradition. Post-Soviet horror found this native territory and made it its own, producing films with a specific dread unlike anything from Western studios.
