The film is based on the novel of the same name by the Russian writer Leo Tolstoy.
“All happy families resemble each other, each unhappy family is unhappy in its own way, ” goes the novel’s opening sentence. The melodrama centers around a tragic story of love and infidelity, the destiny of a woman who irrevocably changes her life for the sake of a passion.
