Vassily Buslayev is an epic Russian hero who rose to defend the freedom and independence of his people. The strength and power of this son of a Novgorod governor, his friendship with simple folk enraged and scared the rich, fat merchants of the city. When they learned that the young man was setting out on a march to save his native land from the enemy, they couldn’t be more happy: how could he defeat a foe so mighty! But Vassily overcomes all intrigues and brings his expedition to a victorious end. He returns home a hero, and not alone but with a sweetheart.
When a threat of enemy invasion again looms over Novgorod, people come and beg Vassily to defend their native land.

Film-skazka o bylinnom russkom bogatyre Vasilii Buslaeve - syne Novgorodskogo posadnika. ZHil on kak hotel, sam po sebe: ne veril ni v son, ni v cheh, ni v zmeinyj ship, ni v voronij graj. Sila i mosch Vasiliya, syna Novgorodskogo posadnika (gubernatora), vodivshego druzhbu s prostym narodom, privodila v beshenstvo i nagonyala strah na razzhirevshih kuptsov novgorodskih. Dana byla emu Bogom sila Velikaya, a komu mnogo dadeno, s togo mnogo sprositsya. Gryanula beda: napal na svyatuyu Rus narod nemilostivyj, lyutyj, mladosti detej i nemoschi startsev ne schadyaschij, i stal Vasilij - russkij bogatyr, schitom i mechom rodimoj zemle, gospodinu Velikomu Novgorodu… Kogda kuptsy uznali, chto yunosha sobiraetsya v pohod vo imya spaseniya svoej zemli ot voroga, radosti ih ne bylo granits. Razve mozhno slomit tu silu velikuyu! No Vasilij kladet konets vsyacheskim koznyam i dovodit svoyu ekspeditsiyu do pobednogo kontsa. On vozvraschaetsya domoj geroem i esche privozit s soboj zaznobu.
