Nikolaj Vladimirovich Olyalin rodilsya 22 maya 1941 goda v Vologodskoj oblasti, v derevne Opihalino, v sem'e portnogo. V detstve on zanimalsya v kruzhke samodeyatel'nosti v mestnom Dome oficerov. Hotya nikto v sem'e ne veril ego zayavleniyam, chto on budet artistom,Nikolaj Olyalin v 1959 godu priehal v Leningrad i srazu postupil v LGITMiK, na kurs Aleksandra Yana. Uspeshno okonchiv institut, artist byl napravlen v Krasnoyarskij TYuZ, na scene kotorogo za neskol'ko let pereigral mnozhestvo raznoplanovyh rolej S 1968 godaOlyalin nachal rabotat' na kinostudii imeni Dovzhenko. V kino akter debyutiroval v roli soldata Boldyreva (fil'm "Dni letnye", vyshedshij na e'krany v 1966 godu). Cherez god ego priglasil rezhisser Yurij Ozerov, na odnu iz veduschih rolej v kinoe'popee "Osvobozhdenie".Rol' kapitana Cvetaeva zasluzhenno prinesla Nikolayu Olyalinu vsesoyuznuyu izvestnost'. Blestyaschim svidetel'stvom nezauryadnogo artisticheskogo talanta Olyalina stali ego posleduyuschie raboty - glavnaya rol' v voennoj drame "Obratnoj dorogi net" i nebol'shaya rol' v fil'me "Beg" rezhisserov A.Alova i V.Naumova. Stoit otmetit', chto na schetu aktera est' i yarko sygrannye roli otricatel'nyh personazhej, naprimer, Silantij iz priklyuchencheskih lent "Propavshaya e'kspediciya" i "Zolotaya rechka". V 1990 godu Nikolaj Olyalin po svoemuscenariyu postavil melodramu "Neotstrelyannaya muzyka", odnu iz glavnyh rolej v kotorom ispolnil sam. V 1998 godu akter sygral odnu iz glavnyh rolej, Kol'ki Poluyanova, v zamechennom i kritikoj, i zritelyami fil'me Petra Lucika "Okraina".
