"To create a heroic style, Eisenstein had to go through the montage of eccentric attractions. A parody streak, strong in Eisenstein's nature, sounds in his first cinematic work - The Strike. It is more subdued in The Battleship Potemkin, but probably will be developed by Eisenstein the engineer in the construction of his future films because gaiety is at the base of the engineering skill in art. (…) The eccentricity of the material, at least the idea of sharp juxtapositions, is coming back to Eisenstein. He inserts automobile races in an agricultural film. I also wanted to add there an x-rayed cow moving across the screen, but Eisenstein turned it down. He is so well provided with his own material that one can make him no present.
It is not that Eisenstein works by the methods of comic art; his films are serious, but the "scaffolds" for creating new theorems Poincaré spoke of in his mathematical works are constructed by Eisenstein on the principles of 'humoristic genre'"

Parodiynaya struya, silnaya v osnove Eyzenshteyna, zvuchit v ego pervoy kinematograficheskoy veshchi – «Stachka». Glushe – v «Bronenostse Potemkin», no, veroyatno, budet razvernuta inzhenerom Eyzenshteynom v konstruktsii ego sleduyushchih veshchey, potomu chto na dne inzhenernogo masterstva v iskusstve lezhit veselost. (…) Ekstsentrichnost materiala, po krayney mere v zamysle rezkosti sopostavleniy, vozvrashchaetsya k Eyzenshteynu. On vstavlyaet avtomobilnye gonki v selskohozyaystvennuyu kartinu. Tuda zhe ya hotel pristroit korovu, prosvechennuyu rentgenom i dvizhushchuyusya na ekrane, no Eyzenshteyn otkazalsya. On tak snabzhen sobstvennym materialom, chto podarit emu nechego.
Delo ne v tom, chto Eyzenshteyn rabotaet priemami komicheskogo iskusstva; ego veshchi serezny, no «lesa» dlya sozdaniya novyh teorem, o kotoryh govoril Puankare v svoih matematicheskih rabotah, u Eyzenshteyna skonstruirovany po printsipam «yumoristicheskogo zhanra»…
